Getting Started

Happy Tuesday! Life lately: moving. We recently bought our first house (adulting moment) but unfortunately, our lease’s end date and our move in date are about two weeks apart. So, for these two weeks, we are staying with friends and all of my possessions are living in a storage unit. This includes pots, pans, and all other cookware. Needless to say, blog material is not happening.

Nevertheless, she persisted. I decided to put a post together about how I got started cooking, and where I learned what I know now. If you’ve read my “about me” section, you know that I began cooking in college. When I first moved out of the dorms and said goodbye to my dining hall plan, I realized very quickly that I would starve if I did not learn how to cook. Growing up cheerleading and dancing, most of my meals were brought to me at the gym or studio, so I didn’t really grow up with that romanticized childhood of watching my mom or grandma slave over the stove (Disclaimer: both my mother and grandma are/were excellent cooks! Schedules were just not on their side when raising babies!). I didn’t even know where to start.

So I started where any millennial starts any journey, on Amazon and Pinterest. On amazon, I was introduced to Martha’s Cooking School by my personal queen, Martha Stewart. This book is where I learned all my skills. On Pinterest, I found easy to follow, delicious recipes. These two got me pretty far. After a while, I decided I wanted to be more adventurous, and the cook book collection was born. Below are a few of my absolute faves for you to sink your teeth into… get it?

If you have no other cookbooks, start here. Martha takes you through all the skills you need, and recipes to try your new skills with!

I LOVE the pioneer woman. Ree Drummond is a mom of four, wife to a rancher, and an all around southern belle. Her recipes are simple, hearty, and kid and farmer approved.

This book is great for couples. These recipes are geared towards families of two, so no waste of ingredients. Side note: this is an EXCELLENT wedding gift! I usually pair it with a Crate & Barrel gift card or a cast iron skillet!
